Worm Casting – Organic form of fertilizer produced from earthworms. Also known as vermicast, worm castings is essentially earthworm waste.
Limestone – Used to raise the PH of your lawn, making it more neutral/basic. One 14kg bag covers roughly 1000sqft. To be used 2 weeks prior to doing any work on the lawn/garden, including fertilizing. Not to be used near potatoes.
Mulch – Used to cover the ground as a decorative finish. Helps keep the temperature and moisture of the ground below it stable, which protects roots from extreme change in weather conditions. Plain cedar mulch and black bark mulch are both without any dyes. However, red and darker cedar mulch may begin to lose their color if in prolonged sun exposure, as their dye degenerates.
Stones – Decorative Finish.
FERTILIZERS
In general, fertilizers have 3 numbers often referred to as the NPK number. The first one is Nitrogen (N), which helps the green growth of the plant, the stem and the leafs. Second is Phosphorus (P), which helps develop roots, flowers and fruition. The third number is Potassium (K), which helps the overall functions of the plant perform correctly. The numeric value associated to each letter identifies the concentration of each nutrient present in the fertilizer.
All-purpose or generic fertilizers often have equal amounts of N P K. A fertilizer that has a higher content of P is usually used on annuals which set up roots. Bone meal is a good example of this. For fruits and vegetables, you typically look for a fertilizer with a higher P & K.
Indoor plants typically have a lower strength fertilizer as they don’t grow as fast. Cacti, African Violets and Orchids each have their own specific fertilizers and soil mixes.
Aluminum Sulfate is not a fertilizer. It acidifies the soil which is useful if your Blue Spruces are turning brown or if you want your Hydrangeas to be blue (In most cases).
